For so long have I been searching for proof that the Christian God values women as much as He values men. According to the Bible, God shows no partiality (Romans 2: 11) and He has the power to have mercy on whomever He chooses (Romans 9: 15). However, for centuries, women have been treated like lesser creatures who have no voice or right to choice.
It is because of this widely accepted chauvinism existing in countless traditions worldwide, that many religious men oppress women without batting an eyelash.
They think it is okay and normal. Unfortunately, the religious chauvinists are clever enough to evolve with the changing world, incorporating their beliefs within the modern society.
It is no shock to hear a man or woman confessing the Christian faith say that women should stay in the shadows of men. So, where did this distorted view on women come from?
For many years, I myself have been a victim of such misguided minds. I was angry at God for permitting women to be treated as slaves and servants within the church. Worst of all, these men and women support their claim through passages in the Holy Book.
For instance, many chauvinistic minds use this verse to suppress the young and aged women in their churches, homes, work place, and learning institutions:
1 Timothy 1: 11-15
‘’ Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to reach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silence……Yet woman will be saved through bearing children, if she continues in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.’’
They interpret this passage that a woman has no right to take up any duty in the house of God. Instead, such leaders force women to stay numb to their calling as they ‘put them in their place’.
Indeed, it is true Eve was the first to fall for she easily believed in the serpent; then she convinced Adam to fall into sin in order to be like God. Also, it is true that God truly kept the woman under the authority of man. So, does that mean women have no place in spreading the word of God and serving Him?
The Bible clearly shows the love God has towards women. Jehovah is the creator of both men and women. So, is it right for a God who claims no partiality to hate another and love the other?
The good news is, God loves, protects, and appoints women as His instruments of change in the world.
The Christian God values women as much as He values men, and These verses prove that He is Pro-Women:
• Anti- Polygamy God: (1 Timothy 3: 12)- The Bible was written by people who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. In this verse, Deacons are encouraged to have one wife.
Also, in Genesis 2: 22, God created A WOMAN and not women. He gave Adam one wife and not two. Basically, the Bible supports monogamy. No woman should suffer under the authority of a promiscuous man in the name of submission. It is the duty of the husband to love only one wife and take care of her just like Jesus loves and takes care of His Bride.
• The Christian God does not tolerate objectification of women.
Modern society has a way of portraying women as objects of sex, pleasure, and monetary value. It is because of this that some women become escorts, strippers, and prostitutes to earn a living. Not only that but more men are treating women as their possessions. They don’t allow their partners to be independent emotionally, financially, and/or physically.
The Christian God does not approve this and you can clearly see it in His words in the entire book of Jeremiah. He compares Judah and Israel to a harlot who has a faithful husband but insists on staying with her lovers.
• He does not condone rape.
In the Levite’s concubine story (Judges 19 and 20) God allowed Israel to slaughter the men involved in the crime (together with the community) for the rape and murder of a woman. Also, God commanded rapists to be killed and the women to be spared when such a calamity befell them (Deuteronomy 22: 25-27). Nonetheless, it was acceptable in Israel for the brothers/kinsmen of the assaulted woman to take revenge on the rapist. This is seen in the stories of Dinah (Gen. 34) and Tamah (2 Samuel 13).
- God is against marital abuse in every form.
According to Paul, he urges husbands to love their wives as their own body just like Jesus loves the church and even died for her. Also, he exhorts husbands to respect and honor their wives for that’s how God intented it to be. What’s more, God is against anyone who commits adultery or defiles the marriage bed. Therefore, abuse in marriage is not an acceptable thing to the lord. Also, drunkedness and foul language is prohibited in the Bible. Paul encourages christians to be sober and be filled by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5: 18-20). In matters concerning language, followers are to take care of what they say (Matthew 12: 36-37, Ephesians 5: 4, 21-32, James 5:12) .
• Women have a right to their father’s inheritance as God Himself had commanded it (Numbers 36: 2, 27: 8).
I don’t know about Eastern and Western laws of inheritance but one thing for sure I know is African tradition of inheritance. In the African communities, women were not allowed to inherit anything from their fathers or uncles. The law givers believed once a woman is married she no longer belongs to her parents but to the family of her husband. However, the Christian God once again proves women have the right to the family’s share just like the men.
• God wants men to take responsibility when their girlfriends/one nightstands get pregnant.
When the Israelites were in wilderness after coming out of Egypt, God gave them a law that forced the man who got a woman pregnant into a lifetime commitment with her (Deuteronomy 22:28-29). As a plus, such a man can NEVER divorce his wife as long as she lived. Now this is girl power! God values children and women. For this reason, He made sure single mothers should not exist if the man responsible is alive to take care of his offspring.
• Widows and orphans are under God’s sovereign protection. God takes it upon Himself to be an advocate for the widows and orphans.
He explicitly says He is the husband to the widows and a Father to the fatherless ( Psalms 68: 5). Additionally, God Himself establishes a curse on any who dares oppresses or rules unjustly towards the widows and orphans (Deuteronomy 27: 19). In case you have lost your husband or spouse, or your children have no fathers, know you have a mighty protector by and on your side. He is a God who values the rights of women and children (Exodus 22: 22-24).
• Jesus of Nazareth was also a respecter of women. When Jesus was 12 years old, he obeyed his parents and went back with them after he stayed behind in the temple (Luke 2: 51). Another case that shows Jesus was kind and fair to women is Luke 7:37-50 and John 8: 1-11.
Jesus stood up for these women when the Pharisees accused them. One was supposed to be killed while the other was shunned by the community for her sinful lifestyle. Likewise, Jesus did not alienate the Samaritan woman who had slept with five men. Neither of them was her husband (John 4:1-26). Instead, through her Jesus was able to draw the village of Samaritans to hear the good news of the gospel, and make them believers! Remember none of these women were saints. Jesus did not segregate himself from them like the Pharisees did.
• God permits women to take part in ministry. He even used women to deliver Israel from their enemies during war. Personally, I call them WARRIOR WOMEN OF the Bible.
-Dear readers, let no one tell you you can’t serve God because you are a woman. God a appointed a prophetess called Deborah to rule Israel as Judge (Judges 4: 4). She even went to war side by side with an army commander called Barak ( Judges4: 8-10). Aside from this, God used a woman to kill a king who terrorized Israel at that time; her name was Sisera (Judges 4: 21). Do you know Queen Esther? She was a Jewish queen who has a whole book written after her in the Bible. It was through her influence that the Jews escaped genocide. There is Ruth, Mary mother of Jesus, Dorcas (Acts 9: 36), mother and grandmother of Timothy (2nd Timothy 1: 5)
Women’s Role in The Christian Church
The role of women is crucial in the salvation of many around the world. You can see this when the Lord Jesus not only had male disciples, but also women followers who helped in the spread of the gospel. These women also played an active role in supporting the ministry by providing whatever Jesus and his disciples needed (Luke 8: 1- 5).
Furthermore, Jesus chose to reveal his risen self to a woman instead of a man (Mark 16: 9). This is because, naturally women tend to believe in things much easier than men (no wonder Eve fell for the serpents lie in Eden and not Adam).
In case you don’t believe what I’m saying, look at Mark 16: 11. Mary Magdalene told the disciples what she saw, but the tough-to-convince men doubted after hearing and witnessing Jesus talk about his resurrection more than once. It because of our faith that God needs women in his ministry to serve him like prophetess Anna did in the temple (Luke 2: 36-38).
In case you are drawn to the tougher and active side of life, don’t worry. Christianity has a place for the warrior women in the world. Just like Judge Deborah and the courageous women who wept and lamented for Jesus as he carried the cross to Calvary, you have a special place among God’s annointed.
Let no one deceive you that only men can take the hard road of preaching the gospel. God knows you best. From your personality, character, strengths, and witnesses, God knows every part of you for He formed you in your mother’s womb.
So, if you are compelled in your heart to take the aggressive form of ministry that requires lots of footwork and physical strength, don’t hesitate to ask Jesus. He will give you the strength and power to do (and even more) what his 12 disciples and apostles did in the olden days.
Women have been and will be placed by God in places of authority (eg being a judge, queen) for the sake of the world’s salvation. As long as you obey the Holy Spirit and walk in Holiness, God will use you to fulfil what He said in Genesis 3: 15. Holy women of God shall raise Godly children who will bruise the serpent (devil/satan/Lucifer) by the blood of the Lamb and the Word of their Testimony!
This Christian God, Yahweh, Elshaddai, Jehovah, loves you as a woman and wants you to be His royal daughter. No one has the right to take away or prevent the ministry you have in Christ Jesus. Serve the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22: 37). Shalom.
